  7. BIZ-083 RUBBER STAMP SERVICE
  8.  
  9. The lowly rubber stamp is a piece of basic office equipment
  10. that every business needs, whether it's a new business or
  11. old one. When you are first starting out in business, you
  12. will need, and want, many different rubber stamps -- one
  13. with your return address, another to stamp checks for
  14. deposit into your checking account, still another to possibly
  15. route letters to the proper person or file or to acknowledge
  16. receipt of a letter.  The uses and needs for rubber stamps
  17. seem to be endless.
  18.  
  19. The old method of producing rubber stamps was to set metal
  20. type to spell out whatever the stamp was to say. Then you
  21. made a female impression of the type in a material called
  22. Matrix Board. Next gum rubber was heated in an electric
  23. rubber stamp press and squeezed onto the Matrix Board. The
  24. resulting rubber stamp was then trimmed to size and glued to
  25. a handle to complete the stamp. It only takes a few minutes
  26. to turn a few cents worth of raw materials into a rubber
  27. stamp that retails for $5.00 - $20.00.

  29. The drawback of the old method of making rubber stamps was
  30. the expense and limitations of the metal type fonts needed
  31. to first set up for the stamp. Each font in each different
  32. size costs anywhere from $50 to $100 each and any logos or
  33. special graphics had to be specially cast in metal before
  34. a rubber stamp could be produced from it. All this added
  35. considerable cost to the rubber stamp and ate into the
  36. stamp service's profit.

  38. Enter the personal computer and a material called
  39. photopolymer rubber. By using this material and a PC
  40. drawing or painting program, any type style, any size, any
  41. logo or design that can be produced and printed by a PC and
  42. laser printer can be turned into a rubber stamp in a few
  43. minutes.

  45. First the stamp is layed out or designed on the PC. Then the
  46. design is printed out as a negative image on transparency
  47. material. By exposing the photopolymer rubber material with
  48. an ultra violet light source through the negative image, the
  49. rubber parts that are exposed to the light harden while the
  50. rest does not. After exposure, the unhardened photopolymer
  51. is washed away, leaving the cured rubber stamp ready to mount
  52. onto a handle and deliver to the customer. This method is so
  53. fast and easy, you could just about offer an instant rubber
  54. stamp service to walk in customers.

  56. Photopolymer rubber stamp kits and ultra violet exposure
  57. units (The Polymer Plus is one example) are available from
  58. printing equipment suppliers such as:

  63. Contact them and others for availability and current pricing,
  64. At the time of this writing, a complete start up kit
  65. featuring the Polymer Plus was priced at less than $1700.

  67. The computer requirements for this type of business are a
  68. little more critical because you will be working with graphics
  69. programs and a 386-33MHZ computer should be considered minimum,
  70. with at least 4 Megabytes of RAM.
  71.  
  72. A hard disk, however, is a must to insure the most efficient
  73. computer operation and the shortest waiting times when working
  74. with databases, spreadsheets, and other memory intensive type
  75. computer applications.  There is an old saying that you can
  76. never have enough hard disk memory.  Start with a minimum of
  77. 250 Megabytes of memory and if you will be running "Windows"
  78. programs, think about an even larger hard disk.

  80. A laser printer is essential to the operation of this
  81. business. With the price of the latest 600 dpi laser printers
  82. dropping below $1,000, I would recommend one of these.

  84. Other office equipment you may want to consider might
  85. include a FAX machine to be able to send and receive reports,
  86. etc. without having to wait for the postal service or even
  87. over-night priority mail.

  89. A telephone answering machine which can sense the difference
  90. between FAX transmissions and voice  may also come in quite
  91. handy in the office.
  92.  
  93. Software recommendations for a business like this are
  94. abundant. From high power commercial drawing programs such
  95. as "CorelDraw" and "Paintbrush Plus" to shareware programs
  96. such as "Desktop Paint", "Fingerpaint", "Neopaint",
  97. "Painters Apprentice", and many more. All these and more are
  98. listed in shareware catalogs and in Appendix A of this book.

  100. General software requirements for a business of this type
  101. consist of the usual word processing, database, accounting
  102. and personal and business income tax preparation software.
  103. As with most of the business ideas presented in this book,
  104. I feel that properly selected SHAREWARE (try-before-you-buy
  105. type software) will prove to be more than adequate for all
  106. your basic business software needs. Using shareware when you
  107. are first starting a business can save you hundreds of
  108. dollars in start up costs. I have found most shareware to be
  109. as good, if not better, than high priced commercial
  110. software packages.

  112. For word processing software, I would recommend either of
  113. two fine shareware programs.  The first is "Super WP", an
  114. excellent WordPerfect clone that has many features superior
  115. to the commercial program. The second is "PC-Write", which
  116. is said to be one of the finest wordprocessor programs,
  117. shareware or otherwise, available at any price.

  119. A database program is usually needed to keep track of
  120. customers, client data, mailing lists and many other forms
  121. of data, etc. The shareware program, "PC-File", is an
  122. excellent shareware database program that has features such
  123. as custom report writing, letter writing with mail merge,
  124. data analysis, plus charts and graph support. "PC-File" also
  125. features dBase III and Clipper compatibility, should you ever
  126. wish to write a custom application for your business.

  128. Every small business needs bookkeeping software to keep
  129. track of income and expenses.  What they don't need is a full
  130. blown accounting package that takes more time than the
  131. business itself. The shareware program, "Medlin Accounting",
  132. is an easy to use, time saving IRS approved single entry
  133. bookkeeping system which is more than adequate for the
  134. small-to-medium sized business. It features a general ledger
  135. module, an accounts receivable module, an accounts payable
  136. module as well as an inventory module.

  138. Another financial program I would recommend to any small
  139. businessman, or individual for that matter, is the shareware
  140. program, "Checkmate Plus".  "Checkmate Plus" is an easy to
  141. use, yet powerful, checkbook style, double entry accounting
  142. system which will also print checks on either laser or dot
  143. matrix printers.

  145. Spreadsheet programs are sometimes required by the small
  146. business and I would concede that the industry leader is the
  147. commercial program, Lotus 1-2-3.  However, an excellent clone
  148. to Lotus 1-2-3 is the shareware program, "As Easy As".
  149. Menu-driven for easy use yet a very powerful spreadsheet
  150. program. Features 8192 rows by 256 columns, dBase III
  151. import/export, macro playback, dot matrix and laser printer
  152. support, worksheet linking, charting and much, much more.

  154. Communications software for use with telephone line and
  155. computer modem is often needed by the small business. By
  156. using communications software, the home based entrepreneur
  157. is able to access remote computers, informational databases,
  158. bulletin board services (BBS's) client's computers, etc.,
  159. right from his/her home office over the phone lines. This
  160. makes many high tech businesses able to be run successfully
  161. from any place a phone can be accessed.
  162.  
  163. The full featured shareware communications program I would
  164. recommend is "Procomm Plus Test Drive".  This time-proven
  165. shareware offering of a commercial program will prove perfect
  166. for most of your communications needs, and has such
  167. features as a 100 number dialing directory, script file
  168. capability and support for most major file transfer protocols
  169. including XMODEM, TELINK, and COMPUSERVE B. However, If you
  170. should purchase a fax/modem for your office, many of them
  171. come already bundled with communications software.
